COLUMBIA, S.C. -- A South Carolina inmate is on the loose after walking away from a crew doing grounds maintenance in a remote part of the Army's largest training installation.
Department of Corrections spokesman Clark Newsom says 27-year-old Jason Ryan Burr slipped away from the work crew at around 12:30 p.m. Thursday on property that is part of Fort Jackson. Newsom says Burr is believed to have stolen a vehicle and may have traveled to Hartsville, where he has family.
In 2010, Burr began serving a five-year sentence for receipt of stolen property. Newsom says Burr has a previous conviction for a vehicle-related crime.
Jail records show Burr was to become eligible for parole on July 20.
