BONNEAU, S.C. (AP) -- A Berkeley County man who tried to elude police in his pickup truck has died after his truck smashed into a tree. Authorities say it happened after the man tried to run down a police officer and later run a cruiser off the road.
Coroner Bill Salisbury says 53-year-old Ronald Smith of Bonneau was pronounced dead at the scene near Bonneau late Tuesday.
Bonneau Police Chief John Waters says Smith was suspected of shoplifting.
An officer pulled the pickup over on U.S. 52 and when the officer got out of his cruiser, the truck took off and tried to run him down. Waters says the driver later rammed a patrol car and forced another car off the road.
