COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Time is running out to take advantage of free credit monitoring being offered by South Carolina after a massive hack of state taxpayer data.
Taxpayers have until Sunday to enroll in Experian's ProtectMyID service. People can go online to www.protectmyid.com/scdor and enter the activation code SCDOR123, or call 1-866-578-5422.
More than 1.4 million people have signed up for the services since Gov. Nikki Haley announced Oct. 26 that an overseas hacker had accessed Department of Revenue records of millions of taxpayers. In all, the information of 3.8 million adults, 1.9 million of their dependents, and 700,000 businesses was compromised.
People who claim minors as dependents have until May 31 to also sign up for the Family Secure program, but they must first be enrolled in ProtectMyID.
