WHITEVILLE, N.C. (AP) -- A Whiteville teen has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge for a December wreck that killed his 16-year-old cousin.

The Columbus County District Attorney's Office says 19-year-old Daniel West received 18 months of probation after pleading guilty Tuesday to death by motor vehicle.

West was driving Dec. 28 when he lost control of his vehicle on a curve, hit a ditch and struck a tree. His passenger and cousin, Ian Quattlebaum, died at the scene.

Investigators say a blood test taken after the crash found no evidence of drugs or alcohol.

West also was ordered to complete 100 hours of community service, surrender his license for a year and speak at six defensive driving schools.

He also must be evaluated for alcohol abuse and complete any recommended treatment.
