GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- A Greenville County jury has convicted a Travelers Rest man in the death of a 20-month-old girl two years ago.
The Greenville News reported (http://grnol.co/15N3yI2) the jury on Wednesday convicted 28-year-old James A. Johnson of homicide by child abuse. Johnson was awaiting sentencing.
Prosecutors say Nevaeh Sprouse died after Johnson threw something at the girl and then covered her mouth when she would not stop crying on May 25, 2011.
The girl's mother told hospital officials that the toddler had choked while drinking a glass of tea. The girl died two days later.
Authorities say an autopsy found bruises and other signs of abuse that matched information Johnson gave investigators.
