DAVIDSON COUNTY, N.C. – Troopers and deputies are investigating two deaths after an early-morning wreck on I-85.
According to Highway Patrol, 33-year-old Courtney Michelle Brown was driving south on I-85 North on Monday after midnight. She turned onto Highway 64, crossed both lanes and then hit a tree off the exit ramp as she tried to get back on I-85.
Troopers say Brown did not wear a seat belt and no alcohol was involved.
Less than a mile from the accident, a driver saw a body on the side of I-85 North and called 911.
Investigators say it was a man's body. Davidson County Sheriff David Grice says he believes the man and Brown were boyfriend and girlfriend.
The sheriff's office said the man had a head injury. His family told investigators that he called asking them to pick him up before the accident, but his phone died before he could give them any information.
Both Brown and the man are at the State Medical Examiner's Office in Chapel Hill.
