RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- U.S. Rep. Mel Watt is heading back to the U.S. House for an 11th term.

The 67-year-old Democrat was re-elected Tuesday from the 12th Congressional District.

In early and unofficial returns, Watt had 88 percent of the vote to defeat 54-year-old Republican computer consultant and tea party member Jack Brosch.

Watt is the only congressman the 12th District has ever known.

The district shows up in many places as the definition of a gerrymander, starting in Charlotte and following the twists and turns of Interstate 85 up to Greensboro, taking in some predominantly black neighborhoods around Winston-Salem as well.
