COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- State troopers say a driver heading the wrong way on Interstate 26 northwest of Columbia has caused a wreck that killed two people.

The Highway Patrol said a GMC pickup was driving the wrong way in the westbound lanes of I-26 around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday and hit the driver of a Toyota pickup head-on.

Troopers say both drivers were killed in the wreck near the weigh station at mile marker 93. Neither was wearing a seatbelt.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts say 50-year-old Marcus Hicks of Irmo was driving the wrong way, and the other victim was 39-year-old Nathan Yon of Newberry.

The Highway Patrol is trying to figure out why Hicks was heading the wrong direction.
