CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte first responders choose a symbolic way to honor their fallen comrades.

On the 10th anniversary of 9/11, they held a memorial stair climb at the Duke Energy building.

Firefighters climbed the building three times for a total of 110 floors, the same number as one of the world trade center towers.

People could watch on a big screen outside the Knight Theater, as they climbed wearing their gear.

343 firefighters, along with 60 law enforcement personnel, and 10 EMS personnel climbed 110 floors of the Duke Power Building in Uptown Charlotte.

Those numbers were meant to represent the first responders lost during the 9-11-01 terrorist attacks.  The 110 floors climbed, is equal to the height of each Twin Tower.

Each participant in the climb donated $25 to participate. All proceeds will go directly to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.

"I think it's bitter sweet for every fireman and all. You didn't have to be there to feel the pain and loss and all the civilians that lost their lives," said John Heinen, Assistant Fire Marshall for Meckenlenburg County.
