CHARLOTTE. N.C. -- This week America remembers the tragedy on September 11, 2001.

Volunteers in Charlotte placed 2,997 flags in the formation of the World Trade Center Towers.

The Steven Coakley Foundation does this every year at the Palmer Building on East Seventh Street in the Elizabeth neighborhood.

Each one of those flags will represent a person killed in the 9/11 attacks.  Coakley was a New York City firefighter and has family that lives in the Charlotte area.  He was among the victims killed in the attacks.
