LASSIE AND FLIPPER'S TRAINER DIES

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- The woman who trained Lassie, Flipper and other animals for the movies has died. Pat Derby also wrangled a pair of pumas for the Mercury Cougar commercials starring Farrah Fawcett. Derby says she was shocked by how other trainers abused and neglected their animals. So, she founded the Performing Animal Welfare Society known as PAWS to protect animals. Derby had throat cancer. She was 69.
