PINEVILLE, N.C. – One day after leading the Carolina Panthers to another win, quarterback Cam Newton spent his Monday night with a group of kids from three Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools.
The group of kids are from Collinswood Language Academy, Reid Park Academy, and Berryhill Schools.
He brought along his friends, wide receiver Brandon LaFell, and backup quarterback Derek Anderson to surprise the kids with a holiday shopping trip through Dick’s Sporting Goods Store in Pineville.
The Foundation Newton started to partner with CMS , paid for each student to get $150 worth of shoes, clothes, or anything they wanted.
“This is the season of giving. It’s just great to see the little kids’ reaction to shopping,” said Newton.
One of the students, Carla Lopex-Flores wanted shoes.
The 6’5” Newton towered over the little girl but found her the size four shoes she was looking for.
Afterwards she called the whole experience “Awesome!”
As the kids shopped, Newton stopped to answer a few questions, including how his toe was doing after he appeared to stub it during yesterday’s game.
“The toe is great,” he said with his trademark smile.
He said he knows the win Sunday over the Jets has fans dreaming of the playoffs for the first time in five years.
“You feel the buzz and the things that are about to happen, so we are going to do our job with great preparation this week so we can be ready come game day,” he said.
Nicolette Grant is the principal at Collinswood Language Academy.
As her students shopped, she said she was as surprised and happy as they were.
“My jaw dropped. I was just overwhelmed with gratitude to his foundation and thinking about the students. Giving back to students who are truly deserving,” she said.
The students too were grateful.
Sixth grader Amaya Crawford said, “I would say thanks for all the generous donations to all the CMS schools and just for the chance to be here,” she said.
