MOORESVILLE, N.C. - A mansion on the shore of Lake Norman burned nearly to the ground this afternoon.

No one was injured in the fire at the home located at 102 Brownstone Drive.

The home is listed as belonging to Jeffrey Arnold and his wife Stephanie.

They were away on vacation but had a female friend house sitting for them and taking care of their two small dogs.

She was inside when the fire started and got out okay, shouting to a landscaper working out front.

"The girl that was staying there said the home was on fire," said landscaper Ben Keller.

Keller said he and a partner ran into the burning house but could not find a fire extinguisher.

Keller said they were able to rescue the family's two little dogs and get them to safety as firefighters were arriving.

Lake Norman Fire Chief Andy Weatherman said, "I've been a fireman for 26 years and this was one of the worst we ever had."

The chief said the Fire Marshal was just starting an investigation to try to determine a cause.

Fire boats had to be called to help pour water from Lake Norman onto the house to finally bring the fire under control.
