CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Icy conditions caused dozens of wrecks and delays across Charlotte's major highways on Friday afternoon.
By rush hour, there were various wrecks on Interstates 85, 77 and 485 across the area. In all there have been 49 vehicle wrecks since 8:30 a.m. Friday, according to Medic, and 22 people have been hurt in those crashes.
Officials say two people suffered life-threatening injuries out of those 49 wrecks. Two other patients have potentially life-threatening injuries, while all other patients should be OK.
There were three overturned cars on I-485 alone from about 3 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
A white car flipped on I-485 innerloop at exit four (Arrowood Road) around 3 p.m. Another vehicle flipped on I-485 and went into an embankment at Steele Creek Road around 3:10 p.m. A third vehicle flipped on the loop into the median near the airport at West Boulevard around 3:15 p.m.
A gray SUV crashed off to the side of the road on Interstate 77 southbound at Nations Ford Road due to ice around 3 p.m.--one of several incidents on I-77.
The metro region has seen .11'' of ice and sleet thus far.
