The state’s two most populous counties were first and second in most arrest and citation categories during the Booze It & Lose It campaign conducted by North Carolina’s law enforcement agencies during the Labor Day holiday period.

State Transportation Secretary Gene Conti says 2,745 DWI arrests were made during the campaign, which ran Aug. 17-Sept. 3. More than 94,000 traffic and criminal citations were issued during the campaign.

Wake County had the most DWI arrests, with 209. Mecklenburg County was second, with 182. The next-closest was Guilford County’s 106. Drinking and driving at the beach ended up in arrest for a number of drivers, as three of the top 10 counties for DWI charges during the campaign were on the southeast coast of the state -- Carteret, New Hanover, and Brunswick.

Wake County also had the most total traffic and criminal citations and arrests, with 9,316. Mecklenburg County was second, with 7.545. Third, with 6,097, was Forsyth County.

And Wake County also led the list for speeding violations by a comfortable margin, with 1,925. Mecklenburg (1,520) was second, followed by Guilford (1,202).
