Reward offered for information on SC deputy death
03:55 PM EDT on Wednesday, August 13, 2008
WALTERBORO, S.C. -- Authorities sifted through hundreds of leads and announced a $10,000 reward offer Wednesday for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the shooting death of a Colleton County sheriff's deputy.
No suspect has been detained but the search continues after Deputy Dennis Compton, 39, was shot Aug. 6 while responding to a home alarm near the rural community of Smoaks.
Sheriff George Malone said the county council will award $10,000 for information that produces a conviction.
"We have received hundreds of critical leads that are being assigned to investigators," said Capt. Roger Heaton of the State Law Enforcement Division. "We are leaving absolutely no stone unturned."
He said he hoped the reward would generate "that last piece of information" needed to solve the crime.
"We'd love to have somebody in custody right now," he added. "I don't think we're that far away."
Heaton said some other arrests have been made during the course of the investigation, but were not related to the officer's death.
"While you are out conducting interviews and following leads, we're running up on people who have outstanding warrants, and we have served a bunch of warrants," he said.
Heaton added the search for a suspect has expanded beyond the local area.
"We're looking locally. We're looking throughout the state of South Carolina. If necessary, we will look elsewhere," he said.
Heaton said people with information can call a tip line at 843-549-1203. They can also call Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIMESC.
