Students come together to honor classmate killed in log truck accident

Tuesday was a difficult day for Hibriten High School.

LENOIR, N.C. -- Students at a local high school will gather Tuesday to remember one of their classmates who died in an accident one week ago.

15-year-old Wesley Oliver was riding to Hibriten High School with his father last week when their pickup hit a log coming out of the back of a logging truck.

The crash happened on November 28 near Wilkesboro Boulevard and Taylorsville Road SE in Lenoir, less than a mile from the high school. Oliver was pronounced dead on scene.

"Our sophomores told us that was his team. He wore Carolina Panthers gear all the time. And basically told us, this is how we think we need to honor him," Hibriten High School Principal David Colwell said.

A student memorial service will be held in the high school's gymnasium at 2:10 p.m.

As of 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, no charges had been filed in the case.
