GRANITE FALLS — A boy died after being crushed between two sport utility
vehicles outside his home, police said.
The accident happened about 6 p.m. Friday in the driveway of the boy's
Granite Falls home when Tyler Handy, 5, was caught between SUVs driven
by his mother and her husband, said Trooper Clifton Mangum of the North
Carolina State Highway Patrol.
The boy's mother, 25-year-old Stephanie Ledford, was in a Toyota
4Runner. Mangum said husband Terry Ledford's Ford Expedition was parked
behind her vehicle.
Terry Ledford was picking up Tyler to take him to a baseball game and
was outside talking to Stephanie Ledford, when her foot slipped off the
brake of her car.
Neither person knew the child had walked between the vehicles when the
mother's car rolled backward.
Neighbors tried to revive the child before emergency personnel arrived,
but Tyler never regained consciousness, Mangum said.
The trooper said no charges were expected because "it was a freak
accident. They just didn't realize that the boy was there."
