BBB issues warning on home contractor

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- After taking out an equity loan to pay for home repairs, Anne Swann, is frustrated to say the least. She and her husband paid $15,000 for a home improvement project that wasn't finished. They hired Weir Builders to do the work.

"We want to rebuild our deck," said Swann, a Charlotte homeowner. "We want a roof on it. We want to side our house. We want new gutters and shutters. We want our house to be maintenance free."

She was hoping that by the time she and her husband retired, they would also be stress free. But instead, they're out of thousands of dollars and still have to pay someone else to finish the job.

"We have been through the gamut, angry, hurt, I mean, devastated. He took the equity out of our home. He stole it" said Swann.

According to the Better Business Bureau, the owner of Weir Builders, Sam Weir, does not have the proper licensing and the BBB says the Swann’s are not the only alleged victims.

"This one person has defrauded at least 20 people out of over a $100,000 in a year's amount of time," said Tom Bartholomy, president of the Better Business Bureau.

Bartholomy says Weir has been doing business under three other names including Sun Masters, Crete Magic and Weir Grafix.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's fraud investigation unit has issued an arrest warrant for him.

The Better Business Bureau says there are alleged victims in both North Carolina and South Carolina, in at least eight counties.
