10:15 AM EST on Monday, January 5, 2009
CHARLOTTE, N.C.-- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police are investigating the first homicide of 2009. Police say a man was murdered on McGarry Trail in West Charlotte late Friday night and alleged killers are still on the loose.
"It's beyond scary and to actually be there and experience it. It was devastating and tragic at the same time," says one neighbor. Neighbors knew it was bound to happen they just didn't think it would be here.
But, Friday night, McGarry Trail became the scene of Charlotte's first homicide investigation this year.
The victim is 38-year-old Louis Navarre.
NewsChannel 36 talked with a neighbor who didn't want us to show her face on camera. "To see that, him die right in front of me, you know it was tragic," says the neighbor.
Police believe Navarre was shot at his home, but somehow made it to a neighbor's house to get help.
He died in their driveway.
"I hate it happened to such a great guy, someone that doesn't bother anybody and whoever did it, I hope they're conscience will bother them enough to turn themselves in."
Neighbors say there's been more crime lately and for a while now, street lights haven't been coming on at night. Still, they never imagined things would get this bad.
"I'm definitely moving. This is my second car break-in and now I'm witnessing a murder." Witnesses say they saw two men and a woman running form the victim's home.
If you have any information about this case you are asked to call 704-432-TIPS where you can speak directly to a homicide detective or call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
