SCOTLAND COUNTY - Hundreds mourn the loss of two priests killed in a car accident.

Father Patrick Shelton and Father David Braim’s churches were in Anson and Richmond counties. Shelton and Draim held services and served the spiritual and emotional needs of parishioners at Saint James and Sacred Heart Catholic Churches. They were on one spiritual journey together since seminary.

"Father David and Father Patrick were the best of friends,” said Bishop Peter Jugis with the Charlotte Diocese.

"All heart is what they were and this is going to hit us for a while, I know,” said parishioner Charles Boyle.

Both died Tuesday on highway 501 in Scotland County. Troopers say they pulled in front of a semi after stopping at a stop sign. They died instantly.

The semi driver involved in the crash will not be charged with a crime. Troopers say she thought the car might pull into traffic, so she slowed down but it was too late.

Boyle first me Father Patrick and Father David in South Carolina and again after they came back from Florida.

"About 30 years ago,” he said.

Both guided Boyle after his wife died.

"They consoled me a way to lead a life of happiness. It's still with me now."

Wednesday, Boyle was one of hundreds attending a prayer service and memorial, listening to Bishop Jugis.

"The message is God is always in charge, God is always in control,” Jugis said.

Consolation and affirmation were part of the ceremony.

To Boyle, it was knowing their spiritual journey was quite the trip and being grateful for one thing he told both of them just a few days ago.

"I said 'I love you Father.' I'm so glad I said that."

Other priests will fill in temporarily. Bishop Jugis says he will meet soon with the Committee of Priests to recommend two new pastoral appointments.
