10:28 AM EST on Thursday, January 26, 2006
Police have released new information on a serial rapist's vehicle who they believe is responsible for a series of sexual assaults that have happened in the Myers Park/Dilworth area since April of 2004. The latest attack happened on Queens Road West in Myers Park. Investigators said the same man attacked women along East Boulevard, Woodway Hills Drive and Roseview Lane. Now Queen's University has posted fliers around campus to keep students on the lookout for a serial rapist who police said just made his fourth strike blocks from the school. This time the victim got away before she was raped. According to police, this time the victim fought off her attacker with moves she got from a kickboxing exercise tape. Then she ran until she found a campus security guard at Queens University. "Immediately we wanted to share it with our residential undergrads," said Queens University Vice President Craig Murden. Murder said the warnings are posted at the entrance of every dorm and an e-mail has been sent out campus-wide. "We do not want folks to take any action on their own. If something is suspicious, report it," said Murden. "Campus police has taken on new rounds, more shifts patrolling the area," said Kaitlin Bower, a freshman at the University. "We know not to go out late at night and we go in groups usually," said freshman Lauren Fletcher. This latest attack happened on one of Charlotte's most popular running routes and news is spreading fast in the fitness community. "We sent e-mails saying not to run with music on and to run with a buddy," said Tara Norbet who jogs in Myers Park. One women even said she's seen the attacker before. She said he was slowly driving on a shady street in Myers Park. "And a guy in a burgundy pick up truck was driving very slowly and staring at me and my dog, which he's pretty big, so I think he just kept going on," said Ann Dallas a Myers Park resident. "That guy was definitely lurking about. I am almost positive it's the same guy. He was driving very slowly and I was getting nervous and frustrated at the same time." Police have released a detailed description of their suspect and the truck he drives. Witnesses said he is Hispanic, roughly five feet six inches tall, and has close cut hair. They believe he is about 35 years old and in each case he has been driving a large maroon colored truck with tinted windows. Police are asking residents to be cautious and to use good common sense. As we mentioned this latest victim had some self defense training, if you would like to learn more about self defense training, follow the links to the right for information on self-defense classes.
