Wind fanned stump dump fire through the night

DENVER, N.C. – Firefighters in Denver fought heavy winds all night Tuesday before containing a fire at a stump dump on Kidville Road.

The fire started burning around 11 a.m. Tuesday in the 30-foot deep dump. At that time, the dump’s owner was using hoes and bull dozers to contain it, and his own water to put out hot spots. But eventually, the fire became more serious.

Around 10 p.m. Tuesday three fire departments were on the scene including Denver, East Lincoln and Alexis. The Lincoln County Fire Marshal and private contractors also responded. They believe the fire started on its own through spontaneous combustion.

Heavy winds were the main concern early Wednesday morning, and firefighters are working to put the fire out before the strongest gusts move into the area.

There are no reports of any injuries.

WCNC's Richard DeVayne contributed to this report.
