'American Idol' winner Fantasia Barrino attended a luncheon Thursday
afternoon hosted by city leaders.
Barrino, who was an hour late, cried as she thanked city leaders for the
recognition. Barrino said she was late because she was feeling sick. She
briefly sat at a table reserved for her, but did not eat.
Among those on hand to meet the 'American Idol' star were Charlotte
mayor pro tem Patrick Cannon and Mecklenburg County commissioner
Wilhelmenia Rembert.

Barrino was presented with the seal of Mecklenburg County and other assorted gifts.
S&S marketing group said Barrino would be available for interviews with the media after the luncheon at Charleston House.
When 6NEWS reporter Tiffani Helberg asked Barrino for a few minutes of her time, Barrino said, “Sure momma.” But was then quickly whisked away from reporters by her security guards without answering any questions. She was at the restaurant for about 45 minutes.
Gov. Mike Easley proclaimed Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004 as Fantasia Barrino Day in North Carolina to mark the day she made her first major singing appearance in her home state since winning the American Idol title in May. Barrino, of High Point, and fellow 'American Idol' contestants performed in Winston-Salem, a stop on the "American Idols Tour 2004."
Barrino moved from High Point to Charlotte this summer, partly to escape the fan frenzy that surrounded her home there. Barrino lives in the Ballantyne area.
