Waxhax forming arts council
WAXHAW, N.C. -- A push is now under way in Waxhaw that could move the town in a new direction.
It is hoped that an arts council now forming there could bring in added revenue and give artists an outlet for their work.
Mayor Daune Gardner got the idea after reading an article about how York County, S.C., has benefitted both culturally and economically from arts programs.
Gardner believes Waxhaw could benefit in a similar way and said she's received a lot of positive feedback already.
"This is an effort that people have really gotten excited about -- to draw [artists] out and to find a way to promote them, not only outside the community but within our community," said Gardner.
The idea strikes a chord with Josh Burch, a local musician who also owns a custom woodworking store in downtown Waxhaw.
"It'll allow people to be aware of what's going on and actually spotlight people who have great talent," said Burch.
Art also plays a prominent role in the life of Tom Risser, a local artist whose sculptures have previously been displayed in downtown Waxhaw.
"It helps me get out the passion and the energy that I have," said Risser.
He supports an arts council but questions how it will work.
"Will they have any money to spend? Where will they have the facility?" asked Risser.
Gardner said some local artists and art lovers have already come forward to help with the council.
She said it's still unclear how it will be established, whether as an arm of the town government or as a nonprofit entity, or a combination of both.
However, even the possibility of a growing presence for the arts in Waxhaw leaves artists like Risser optimistic.
"It's better than what we had a year ago, which is nothing," said Risser. "The next generation, what could they accomplish if they've got a thriving arts community? It's exciting."
