ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. – A volunteer firefighter from Concord was killed Monday when he lost control of the truck he was driving on Old Concord Road.

James Earl Arthur, 19, was returning home from his job at Kennerly Yarn in China Grove around 7:25 p.m. when he ran off the road on the left after rounding a sharp curve. Arthur overcorrected and lost control of the 2003 Ford pick-up truck, which began overturning. He was reportedly not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the truck.

Officers estimate Arthur was traveling between 60 and 70 mph at the time of the accident. The speed limit within that zone is 55 mph.

Arthur was a volunteer firefighter with the Coldwater Fire Department in Cabarrus County.
