Crews prepare to implode uptown building 9:07 PM
09:07 PM EST on Friday, February 23, 2007
In just hours, an old Uptown building will come down in a big way.
The old Duke Energy building is full of dynamite, all set for Saturday morning’s implosion.
John Booth is with D.H. Griffin wrecking company, which is in charge of the implosion, and said his company had placed about 400 pounds of explosives inside the building.
But that was after months spent taking out what they could salvage from the building at First and Church streets. To bring the building down, they first had to carefully place the dynamite.
“They've drilled approximately a thousand holes, put the dynamite in there with chords and they will then be hooked to an electrical device,” Booth said.
That won't take long to reduce this 300,000 square-foot building to rubble.
“You'll probably hear the first boom and in 16 seconds that will all be over,” Booth said.
Before they do it, his crew is putting up curtains, trailers, and plywood to make sure sidewalks and nearby buildings don’t get hit with flying debris.
“It's got a lot of history this building and it's all coming down,” Booth said.
The building actually comes down at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, and WCNC will stream it live here on the Web site.
