A SWAT team was called to north Charlotte home Wednesday morning.
As police were arresting the man inside the home, officers say the man’s brother fired shots at officers from upstairs. No officers were hit, but they returned fire and hit the suspected shooter. He was taken away by ambulance with non life-threatening injuries.
“I can’t tell you how careful SWAT is every time they go out. They take extra precautions to make sure, because the first priority is, of course, that everybody comes out safe,” said CMPD spokeswoman Julie Hill.
Police say the gang member they arrested was an illegal immigrant from El Salvador. They believe he created false vehicle documents.
Guns were seized from the home and up to 11 other people were taken in for questioning. The North Carolina DMV and immigration officials are also investigating the incident.
