CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Misuse of prescription drugs is the nation's second most prevalent drug problem.

A recent study by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration shows the problem is especially bad among teenagers.

"Many teens wrongly believe prescription drugs are safer than street drugs because they're issued by doctors and they're given away free by relatives and friends," said John Emerson with the DEA.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are teaming up with several other agencies to get prescription drugs off the streets.

Operation Medicine Drop takes place Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Seven Harris Teeter locations in Mecklenburg County will be collecting unused or outdated prescription drugs.
