Fire under investigation

YORK, S.C. -- Investigators were back on the scene Friday of a massive fire that destroyed the old Lockmore Mill in York County.

They are closer to determining where the fire may have started but have yet to figure out a cause.

ATF and state investigators scoured the property most of the day Friday.

They say their biggest challenge is examining a scene that stretches 25,000 square feet.

They believe the real keys to the investigation will be the strongest burn patterns, which will indicate where the fire sparked.

“It’s a slow process,” said York Fire Chief Domenic Manera. "Every little piece will help us put it together."

Pat McCurry was one of the first witnesses and worked as a spinner at the mill in the 1960s.

She and fire investigators believe the oil, which spilled from the old equipment there, may have caused the fire to spread so quickly.

"The floors were saturated. I mean they were literally soaked," said McCurry.

Investigators are also interviewing witnesses and trying to gather photos and video they may have taken from the scene.
