GASTON COUNTY, N.C. -- A confirmed tornado touched down in Gaston County overnight, knocking down trees and power lines and ripping roofs off buildings.

No one was injured, but the same line of storms is being blamed for a tornado in Greensboro that killed one person and injured three others.

Duke Power reports that more than 3,000 customers are without power. Three Gaston County Schools -- North Belmont Elementary, Catawba Heights Elementary, Gardner Park Elementary -- are closed Friday because of the weather damage.

It might be easier to ask what areas in Gaston County haven’t been impacted by last night’s storm.

In McAdenville, trees hit homes, cars and even boats. Left in the tornado's wake was a mess that will take people here days, perhaps even weeks, to clean up.

"We (are) just happy to be alive," said Bobbie Gregory as she stood outside her home only hours after she and her family felt the storm’s furry. "I hear a roar and went to my daughter’s room grabbed her and ran towards the closet."

They escaped right ahead of a tree falling partially onto on the Gregory’s home.

From the time the tornado blew through the county, the phones at the Gaston County Sheriff’s Office were ringing off the hook.

They reported lots of phone calls about loss of power and trees down, but fortunately no major injuries.

A viewer sent in this photo of a Gastonia office building. See more photos of the storm and its damage.

Also in the county, there were several weather-related accidents on Interstate 85 in the northbound lanes.

The sheriff’s department says in one accident, two cars and three big rigs wrecked when trees where blown onto the interstate.

"Some people where transported, but at this time we don’t know the extent of their injuries," said one very busy dispatcher.

In town, emergency workers clear away a roof right off Wesleyan Drive, one they still aren’t sure where it came from.

"It came from the mill, maybe. I can’t tell," said one worker.

The tornado also claimed the town’s oldest tree, the one used as the town’s Christmas tree every year.

"It’s just so sad, that tree’s been here forever," said a pained Bobbie Gregory when she called us this morning.

Part of Cherry Street in Mount Holly was closed as crews took time to clear away trees from the road right in front of the Catawba Freewill Baptist Church.

A tree that didn’t hit the road, hit the house of Barbara Vernon.

"I was in the bedroom and if it hadn’t been for the Lord wakening me up I would not have been here talking to you," Vernon said.

Vernon said she managed to flee her bedroom after hearing a loud roar, seconds before that mighty pine smashed through her bedroom roof.

"I was lucky. And blessed," she said.

Several counties were under tornado warnings on Thursday night when severe storms moved through the area.

A viewer in Caldwell County sent photos to WCNC of what appeared to be a funnel cloud.

In Iredell County, residents reported that wind toppled a tree onto a car with a person inside, but no injuries were reported.

The forecast for overnight shows partly cloudy skies with lows around 60. Saturday will be the best day of the weekend with lots of sunshine and highs in the low 80s. Again Sunday there's a good chance of showers and storms with much cooler temperatures, around 70.
