Surveillance shows shooting at Charlotte motel 7:12 AM
07:12 AM EDT on Wednesday, May 14, 2008
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Surveillance video captured the shooting of two motel clerks in Charlotte on Monday night.
One clerk, identified as Larry Broughton, died at the scene. The other clerk, Manjula Patel, is in serious condition.
Both work at the Country Hearth Inn on West Sugar Creek Road near Interstate 85.
Police said two armed men entered the motel and shot the clerks during a robbery. The gunmen remain on the run.
Police said the suspects walked into the motel like two customers.
“It’s just a shame it just didn’t need to happen," said Hank Bragg, a friend of both victims. "These two guys came in and asked for a room. The next thing Larry noticed this guy had a gun to him. I don’t know what happened after that."

Police say the men fired several shots, killing 63-year-old Broughton and wounding 55-year-old Patel, who is the wife of the motel owner.
Broughton has been married for 36 years, has two daughters and four grandchildren with a fifth on the way.
His friends remember that he had a giving spirit and donated time and money to charities.
"I understand the proceeds from this just went to different charities and scholarships or something," Bragg said. "That's just the way Larry was. I couldn't keep up with him. That's how much energy this guy would put into this stuff."
Broughton’s family said they are planning on explaining the sad news to his grandchildren.
