NAACP pushes for tougher scrutiny of police shootings 3:25 PM

03:25 PM EDT on Thursday, June 12, 2008

Associated Press

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The president of the North Carolina chapter of the NAACP says he'll push for a new law to force mandatory investigations of police shootings.

The Rev. William Barber II said the civil rights group is upset over a rash of police shootings -- especially a recent case in Charlotte in which a 21-year-old man was fatally shot in the back.

Aaron Winchester was being pursued by officers who had stopped him for questioning. Authorities have said he had a gun, but witnesses dispute the police account.

Barber made his comments after he met with Charlotte and Mecklenburg County officials to request more training for officers to prevent the use of deadly force. He said police shootings should automatically be referred to the State Bureau of Investigation.
