Al Sharpton visits Charlotte, criticizes police 5:15 PM

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Rev. Al Sharpton made a special visit to the Queen City on Friday to speak out against the city’s handling of a recent police officer involved shooting.
Sharpton met for more than a half-hour with the city attorney and other staff.
He was flanked by members of his National Action Network and a high profile civil rights attorney. They vigorously criticized the shooting death of 21-year-old Aaron Winchester.
Police say Winchester was shot in the back after he reached into his back pocket and pulled a gun while cops were investigating a domestic dispute last month.
"Even in the pursuit of a crime, that a policeman has the right to become the judge, jury and executioner is not only unconstitutional, it is immoral and this family should not be suffering that," said Sharpton.
"A lot of mothers have lost their sons on the street and I never realized how important this was with a lot of kids laying in the street and with no answers to why," added Winchester’s mother, Bonita.
Sharpton is critical of the current civilian review board which reports to the city manager’s office which also is responsible for the hiring of the police chief.
“We need an independent process. We’re talking to people that are basically in a position that you can’t put a check and balance,” Sharpton argued.
Interim police chief David Graham, who took part in the meeting, said Sharpton’s concerns were heard.
“We’re glad to take those under consideration as we review our daily operations especially in response to use of force," Graham said.
