9-year-old reports attempted abduction in Union County
05:40 PM EDT on Tuesday, June 16, 2009
WAXHAW, N.C. -- Officers in Union County are investigating an attempted child abduction.
A 9-year-old girl told her parents that two black men in a van pulled up to her in the Somerset neighborhood and asked her to get inside.
"Van came up to her. They asked her if she could get in the van and help them look for their kids," said Byron Blizzard, the girl's father. "She just immediately turned around and ran to a neighbor's house -- just, you know, all upset. She just said the van sped off."
The girl's parents called 911.
Police are searching for a white paneled van with dark windows and a North Carolina license plate.
The girl told police that the van had a bumper sticker with the word "dead" on it. Police think that could mean that the van has a Grateful Dead bumper sticker.
The girl said the driver of the van was an older man with gray stubble. She said the passenger was younger than the driver and was wearing a hat or a toboggan.
The Union County Sheriff's Office is investigating. Anyone with information should Crime Stoppers at 704-283-5600.
