Sinkhole swallows SUV in Shelby 4:50 PM
04:50 PM EDT on Friday, June 22, 2007
SHELBY, N.C. -- A sinkhole on one of the busiest streets in Shelby swallowed an SUV on Friday afternoon.
No one was injured, and crews were able to pull the vehicle out of the hole.
It happened around 1:30 p.m. on Marion Street. A 2004 Chevy Tahoe was parked along the side of the road and sunk into the hole caused by a water main break, officials say.
Utilities crews are still trying to figure out exactly where the main broke. The road is expected to be closed through the rest of the evening.
