Roberts and Cook, Jr.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A woman and her 7-year-old son who were reported missing on Tuesday have been found safe.

The woman's family became worried when she didn't come home from a court appearance involving a restraining order against her ex-husband.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said that late Wednesday afternoon that Jauwanna Roberts called police and told officers that she left the area willingly to sort things out.

Roberts and her ex-husband, Alfonzo Cook Sr., were scheduled to be in court together on Tuesday afternoon on charges he violated a restraining order she took out against him. Roberts claimed in court documents that Cook hit her and held her in the elevator of the Mecklenburg County Courthouse and threatened to kill her and their son in November of last year.

Police arrested Cook Wednesday morning for violating that restraining order, after hearing he allegedly had unauthorized contact with his son.

Given the circumstances, police issued a missing persons alert for Roberts and her son Alfonzo Cook Jr., treating it as a worst-case scenario.
