Fire engulfs Rock Hill building
ROCK HILL, S.C. -- A Rock Hill landmark went up in flames on Friday.
It's the second fire in two years at the Rock Hill Printing and Finishing Bleachery. Firefighters say Friday's blaze started on the roof, the same spot where the fire started in 2007.
On Friday afternoon, residents stared at the sky as huge plumes of black smoke billowed overhead for hours.
"It's kind of amazing, smoking up like this," said resident Tyrone Ervin.
Investigators say the fire started on the roof, burning wood and tar. The building has been vacant for years, so fire investigators are calling the blaze suspicious.
"Anytime you have a building that's vacant, there's no utilities on the structure, there's no one actually physically using the structure, it would have to be suspicious," said Rusty Myers with the Rock Hill Fire Department.
No one was injured in the fire. Investigators say the building is a known location for vagrants and graffiti taggers.
The old mill was slated for redevelopment.
Rock Hill officials say the city's Fourth of July celebration is scheduled to continue as planned. However, the Rock Hill Fire Department asks visitors to stay on the City Hall side of Dave Lyle Boulevard so as not to hamper the firefighters' efforts to contain the smoke.
The following streets around the Bleachery are closed:
-White Street from Wilson Street to Columbia Avenue
-Stewart Avenue from Constitution Boulevard to Oakland Avenue
-Laurel Street from Peachtree Street to White Street
