Officer kills man in shootout
GASTON COUNTY, N.C. -- South Carolina investigators are at the scene of an officer-involved shooting in Gaston County to rule out a possible link to the Gaffney serial killer.
Police have not released the name of the man who was killed by police officers Monday morning after he allegedly shot an officer in the leg.
"All I know is his name is Patrick," said Mark Stamey about the man he was with early Monday morning outside his brother's house on Dallas Spencer Mountain Road.
"I have to go now to speak with more (police)," he said as he walked away.
Gaston County police said they received a call at about 2:40 a.m. Monday about a possible breaking and entering at a vacant house.
When officers arrived they found 35-year-old Mark Stamey, his sister, 31-year-old Sharon Stamey, and another unidentified man sitting in an older model Ford SUV.
Officers spoke to the three and asked them what they were doing at the vacant house so early in the morning.
A neighbor who watched said she saw the three go into the house after speaking with the officers.
"It was Sharon and Mark and a big old guy," said Terry Valentine. "That house has been vacant for a while. There's no electricity in it."
Police said, at first, the unidentified man gave them a false name. When they got his real name officers realized he had warrants for his arrest in Lincoln County. That's when officers went into the dark house.
Valentine, who said she watched from across the street, said she saw Mark and Sharon Stamey walk out of the house, but then she heard a shot.
"It was one shot and it was coming from this end of the house and being fired at the police officer," Valentine said. "Then I heard four shots."
Officer J.K. Shaw was hit once in the leg. He was treated and released from a hospital.
The unidentified man was killed.
The SBI is investigating the shooting. The officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
Meanwhile, investigators from Gaffney, S.C., and the SC State Law Enforcement Division were at the scene to rule out the possibility that the shooting could be related to the Gaffney serial killer.
An SUV outside the house matched the description of the alleged serial killer's vehicle, which is a grey or champagne Ford Explorer.
Investigators told NewsChannel 36 they wanted to leave no stone unturned.
