Police: Woman may have been drinking, doing cocaine

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Investigators from the Belmont Police Department have served a search warrant at Tony’s Bar, a small, obscure, hole-in the-wall sort of place where they believe a woman may have used cocaine and had one to many beers.

That woman, Charla Davis, got into her SUV the night of Aug. 7, and according to police struck and killed long-haul trucker Ron Eudy, who had stopped his big rig on the Wilkinson Boulevard Bridge to help another driver.

Tony’s bar is less then half a mile from that bridge and according to newly released search warrants, tipsters have told police Davis was there doing cocaine and drinking beer there prior to the accident.

In the warrant, investigators say they want to see bar records and find out if Davis used a credit card there to buy alcohol. A man who identified himself as Tony would not go on camera but told Newschannel 36 reporter Rad Berky that the bartender who was working that night had been there 36 years and would not have served alcohol to someone who was drunk.

Belmont Police also have a search warrant for Davis’ SUV. They believe the "black box" recorder can tell them how far and how fast the car was driven prior to the accident.

Police Chief David James would not comment on what police have recovered in the searches but did say, "It’s becoming clear about the facts and the events that led up to the collision."

Charla Davis remains locked up and unable to post bond. Her lawyer did not return a call for comment on the warrants.
