Flooding forces residents out

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Doral Apartment renters are salvaging what they can after being forced out by floodwaters.

People's belongings poured onto the carpet Wednesday morning.

"The water level was to about here,” said renter Jason Kelly, waist-high up to a door.

The water receded after a day of flooding.

Now, Kelly and his wife are salvaging what they can, moving out and moving in with relatives.

"It's awful because it's three days of work I am going to miss, and we have to go find a new place to live,” Kelly said.

It’s the same for dozens of fellow first-floor renters. Wednesday they were wading through the muck and adding up the damage.

"It's at least $15,000,” Kelly said. "Not including the books or DVDs out there. That's just furniture and random stuff."

Meanwhile, Paulette Alexander's temporary home is a Red Cross shelter at East Mecklenburg High School. She left the Doral with her dog, Maxie.

"I lost my car. I've lost my home right at the moment. I don't know about the clothes,” Alexander said. "It's devastating."

At last check, 96 people had registered for help. Most were from the Doral Apartments.

About 20 people were at the shelter at 11 p.m. Wednesday. The Red Cross expected more to trickle in overnight.
