Residents concerned after shots fired at homeowner

FORT MILL, S.C. -- More than 100 Fort Mill neighbors gathered Thursday evening to discuss an apparent burglary attempt in which the suspect fired a gun at a homeowner.

The crime was reported early Sunday morning on Fairway Drive near Doby’s Bridge Road.

“I don’t see any pattern to this,” said Fort Mill Police Lt. Ray Dixon. “There’s really no rhyme or reason to why (the gunman) did what he did.”

Several neighbors told police someone knocked on their doors at around 5 a.m. Sunday.

One of the homeowners looked through a window and heard shots fired in his direction, Dixon said.

The homeowner was not injured.

“It just kind of worries me because it’s right there,” said Emily Helms, a Fairway Drive resident who attended a meeting organized by police Thursday at Fort Mill Middle School.

Dixon told the neighbors that crime is down even as the town grows.

There were 11 armed robberies reported in Fort Mill in 2006, Dixon said. There were just five similar crimes reported in 2007.

Investigators do not have a description of the suspect in Sunday’s shooting, Dixon said.
