SC's Grand Strand survives Hanna with few problems

07:18 AM EDT on Saturday, September 6, 2008

Associated Press

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Tropical Storm Hanna has moved past South Carolina's Grand Strand without causing serious damage.

The center of the storm moved ashore just after 3 a.m. near the North Carolina state line.

Scattered power outages and fallen trees were reported across Horry and Georgetown counties, but there were no injuries or major damage.

Authorities say heavy rain and a storm surge of two feet closed U.S. 17 near downtown Georgetown for several hours Friday night, but the highway has reopened. The area frequently floods.

Flooding was also reported in North Myrtle Beach.

More than three inches of rain fell across the area, with peak wind gusts clocking in at around 50 mph.

Crews are out cleaning the beaches and forecasters expect a beautiful, but breezy Saturday.
