Officials say SC will have enough flu vaccine

04:23 PM EDT on Saturday, September 27, 2008

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina health officials say enough flu vaccine has been ordered this year for everyone who is recommended to get a shot.

State Department of Health and Environmental Control spokesman Adam Myrick told The Greenville News for a story Saturday that everyone over 6 months of age should get a flu shot.

DHEC says about 700 South Carolinians die each year from the flu. Those most at risk are children, people with chronic medical conditions and the elderly.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention added older children -- up to 18 years old -- to the groups that should get a shot. Nationally, a record 146 million doses of the vaccine will be produced this flu season. The state has ordered 266,000 doses.
