SEWANEE, TN -- A graduate of Myers Park High School died Sunday after falling off an overlook in Sewanee, Tenn., officials said.
Greer Yorke, a freshman at the University of Georgia, was visiting friends at the University of the South. They climbed up Morgan's Steep, a popular lookout spot at the edge of campus.
Police investigators said Yorke went to sit on the edge of the bluff when he fell. A friend who was with him called 911.
Officer J.E. Rollins of the Sewanee police department wrote in his report that Yorke fell 40 feet. “Mr. Yorke was unresponsive to verbal or pain stimuli,” Rollins wrote. “He had injuries to his head and leg.”
Yorke was airlifted to Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga, where he died Sunday night. The funeral will be in Charlotte on Thursday.
“The Sewanee community is deeply saddened by this tragic accident,” said University of the South Vice Chancellor Joel Cunningham. “Our sympathy and prayers are with Greer Yorke's family and friends, and with the University of Georgia community.”
