Suspicious packages delivered to Observer building
01:17 PM EDT on Tuesday, October 28, 2008
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Authorities say packages sent to The Charlotte Observer and initially viewed as suspicious are not hazardous.
The Observer reports that law enforcement officers responded to the newspaper's offices late Tuesday morning after at least two suspicious packages were received in the mail.
The Charlotte Fire Department's hazardous materials team responded, and Capt. Rob Brisley said they determined the packages were not a danger.
It's the second such incident in Charlotte this week. On Monday, the department responded to a Charlotte high-rise building after a suspicious package showed up there. That package was also determined to be non-hazardous.
Both incidents have been turned over to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police and federal officials.
