Resume is key to landing job
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- With looming layoffs around our area, NewsChannel 36 wants to put you back to work. Every Monday this month, we are talking jobs.
The Career Cruiser is Mecklenburg County Job Link’s tool to bring resources to the community.
"We get to touch a lot of lives and we see a lot of benefits for people getting employment," said De'Ann Cunningham, program coordinator for the Career Cruiser.
The mobile resource center helps to link job seekers with actual jobs. It also helps with assessment and tips for people to improve their resume. A key if you’re looking for work.
"It is an advertisement of your skills, your abilities and your accomplishments," said Doug Morrison, a Charlotte-based professional resume writer. He runs CareerPowerResume.com.
"We all have something we can display as genius,"” he said.

His advice is to make your resume readable with the use of active verbs and make it relative.
"A prospective employer wants to know how will hiring you benefit me," he said.
When it comes to your experience, go beyond just listing your job duties, include results and be specific.
Instead of saying I managed a team of 10 sales people, say you led a team of 10 people to increase company revenues by 20 percent.
Don't wait for the employer to call your references. Morrison suggests attaching personal endorsements, like you read on the inside of a book -- quotes from those who know you best.
"People who know the quality of your work, who know you professionally, who can quantify your impact on the job," he said.
Think of your resume like a TV ad -- you want your employer to buy into you. That's what career coach Tom Killen says.
"Take a look at your experience from a bird's eye view and say where are my gaps? Fill those gaps, but then I'd also say make sure you are accentuating your strengths," Killen said.
Stay away from gimmicks. The potential response is too risky.
"If you get too far out of the box, you put yourself out of the running for a lot of different jobs," he said.
