New SC lottery computers cause problems

FORT MILL, S.C. -- The South Carolina education lottery has a new computer system, but there’s a problem. It's saying some people won when they haven't and saying others have lost when they've won.

NewsChannel 36 went to Fort Mill to find solutions to the snags.

The Red Rocket has new tickets, new machines and new printers, but with that comes new frustrations for both their clerks and customers. At many lottery retail stores, the snafu has meant losers coming up as winners and winners coming up as losers -- and all those lottery winners have one simple question: "Where's my money?"

We talked to a lot of lottery regulars Wednesday.

"About twice a week to Red Rocket to play the scratch-offs and Powerball," said Patricia Green. "$20, $50, I've won $250."

But these days Green double checks every ticket she buys.

"The system's botched," said Red Rocket clerk Rick Baumann Jr. "The tickets don't read right."

Baumann has been troubleshooting the snags since last week when the new system launched Nov. 5.

"This is the new machine setup. It comes in three pieces," he said, showing NewsChannel 36 how it works. "You just scan the back of it and it picks it up."

But lottery officials say the new tickets have a different barcode so winners on the old tickets, those bought before Nov. 4, are showing up as losers under new scanners.

Baumann describes other problems he's seen, saying, "That was the whole problem, saying we paid it already (but we hadn't)."

Lottery officials are telling clerks to enter old tickets manually.

"We have to punch all the numbers in and it's like a dozen or more numbers," Baumann said.

He adds that the process is too slow saying, "I've had a few people walk out where you can see they're impatient."

Lottery officials expect the problems to go away once the old tickets are out of circulation. But, remember, you only have 180 days to claim your winnings. So if you're a winner but it's not showing up at the store, lottery officials say you can get your money at one of the claim centers in Columbia, Greenville or Charleston. You can also do that by mail.
