DALLAS, N.C. -- A man died Thursday night after being shot by two Gaston County police officers.

The shooting happened at about 6:30 p.m. on Starview Lane just east of Dallas.

Gaston County police say officers responded to Starview Lane after residents there reported that a man was shooting into his house.

When officers arrived, they heard gunfire and saw John Moore, Jr., in the street armed with a handgun.

Gaston County police say the officers ordered Moore to drop the gun but he refused and moved toward the officers. Two officers then fired at Moore.

He was rushed to Gaston Memorial where he later died.

The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating.

Sgt. J.A. Leatherwood and Officer J.R. Rollins have been placed on administrative leave with pay.
