Contractor says 485 ready for opening

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Skanska, the contractor on the long-delayed next leg of Interstate 485, says the job will be done next week but the State DOT says, "It's not going to happen."

NewsChannel 36 first reported a week ago that the job could be done in time for Black Friday shopping. Skanska spokesperson Mark Hubbard in a statement Friday said, "We are prepared to turn the road over to NCDOT for traffic by next Tuesday, Nov. 25, so that holiday travelers would have use of the highway."

"I'm afraid not," said NCDOT spokesperson Jen Thompson.

Thompson said there are still issues of drainage in the center median and with the installation of plastic lane markers.

"Temperatures need to be 50 degrees to put down thermoplastic markers," she said.

Skanska's spokesman said the drainage issue has already been fixed and said the plastic markers will all be in place by next Wednesday.

Thompson said the state was making one concession. Because of the length of time it is taking to get traffic lights installed at W.T. Harris Boulevard, large temporary stop signs will be put in so the road can be opened when it's ready even if the lights are not completed.

Installing the permanent lights could take two weeks and may be longer after a crew broke a water main Thursday.

The temporary stop signs mean the road could open as early as the week after Thanksgiving.
